Welcome to Embassy Praia’s web page. We want this site to give you a sense of what we do, a bit of information about the country of Cape Verde, and an opportunity to learn more by exploring other links.
The United States established full diplomatic relations with the Republic of Cape Verde shortly after Cape Verde achieved independence on July 5, 1975. It has had a resident Embassy in Praia since 1978.
The U.S. maintains an Embassy in Cape Verde to protect U.S. national interests, support democracy and human rights, build close and constructive relations, provide consular services and humanitarian assistance, and increase bilateral trade and people-to-people contacts.
One of the unique features of our relations with Cape Verde is in the consular area. There are nearly as many Cape Verdean Americans living in the U.S. as there are Cape Verdeans in Cape Verde. Family ties, financial remittances, visits, and emigration all have an important impact on the work the U.S. Embassy does here.
