Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Thomas Shannon Meets with President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.
ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF STATE TOM SHANNON VISITS ARGENTINA
Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Thomas Shannon visited Argentina on April 10 and 11. Accompanied by Ambassador Wayne, Shannon met with President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner on the first day of his visit. "We will strengthen bilateral cooperation for the benefit of both countries. U.S.-Argentine relations are excellent and important for our government." — Shannon later commented. On day two, Assistant Secretary Shannon and Ambassador Wayne met with Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana, Vice Foreign Minister Victorio Taccetti and other key MRE officials at the Palacio San Martín. At the meeting, they agreed to a high-level meeting in June in Buenos Aires under the framework of a special process for regular high-level bilateral consultations. (more)

What is Earth Day
Earth Day, April 22, is the annual U.S. celebration of the environment and a time for Americans to assess the work still needed to protect the natural gifts of our planet. Earth Day has no central organizing force behind it, though several nongovernmental organizations work to keep track of the thousands of local events in schools and parks that mark the day. It affirms that environmental awareness is part of the country s consciousness and that the idea of protecting the environment -- once the province of a few conservationists -- has moved from the extreme to the mainstream of American thought.
