Blues and Jazz Artists Bring Down the House in Mersin and Adana
April 7- 8, 2008 -- The Consulate hosted two concerts by celebrated American blues vocalist Bettie Mae Fikes and her band -- George Johnson (percussion), Robert Watson (bass guitar), and Eugene Blacknell (keyboard) -- and famed Turkish blues guitarist Mehmet Ali Acet. Bettie Maes flawless vocals and vigor won over more than 750 audience members in Mersin and Adana while displaying U.S.-Turkish synergy at its finest, both on the stage and off as the Consulate held the concerts in collaboration with local partners dedicated to supporting the arts. This concert tour is being held in honor of the eminent Turkish-American Ahmet Ertegun, who was a giant in American music for several decades prior to his death in 2006. Sharing American Blues, one of Erteguns favorite genres, with a wider Turkish audience is a fitting way to honor his memory.
