Remembering and Honoring Lives Lost 25 Years Ago…
On April 18, 1983, a vehicle, loaded with explosives, crashed into the main entrance of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut. Portions of the Embassy were completely destroyed by the blast. Fifty-two people were killed and many were injured.
On September 20, 1984, shortly before noon, a van, loaded with explosives, was driven onto the Embassy compound at high speed. The explosion demolished the Embassy annex, killing nine Embassy staff members and injuring many others... (more)

The United States Celebrates Earth Day April 22
The United States celebrates Earth Day today along with many other countries. Earth Day began in the United States on April 22, 1970, when Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson called for an environmental teach-in, or Earth Day, in order to demonstrate popular support for environmental issues. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Lebanon is actively engaged in preserving and conserving the environment in Lebanon in partnership with ministries, municipalities and civil society organizations. USAID’s $26 million contribution to support the environment is a gift from the American people to Lebanese throughout the country... (more)
“THEY CAME IN PEACE”
Today marks the 25th anniversary of the April 18, 1983, bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut. Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Michele J. Sison presided over a ceremony, held at the U.S. Embassy in Awkar, to commemorate the anniversary. Chargé Sison welcomed survivors who continue to work with the Embassy, former employees and family members of the victims who came to the event and said “I am truly humbled by your dedication, and I know that all of the American staff here join me in feeling proud to be working with you”...
