My husband and I have been taking care of our neice after her parents turned over legal sole custody to us 5 months ago. They were unable to provide food, clothing or stable shelter for her and also neglected her medical needs as well has her emotional and growing needs. She is 20 months old and suffers from Febrile Seizures. The biological parents both suffer from schitzophrenia (not sure if I spelled correctly) and one suffers from manic Bi-polar disorder. Neither work and both live off of what people will give them. My question is......can my husband and I go in and legally adopt our neice What steps do I need to take first I want to be sure she does not ever have to return to that situation. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. A judge will need to determine that they are unfit to parent and terminate their legal rights. Then you would do a petition to adopt. However, if it s a case of them needing medical care th...
